Contributing editor Bernd Heinrich writes the "Naturalist at Large" column for Natural History. He is professor emeritus at the University of Vermont where he has specialized in the study of insect physiology and behavior and bird behavior. Among his books are The Snoring Bird: My Family’s Journey Through a Century of Biology (Ecco HarperCollins, 2007); Life Everlasting: The Animal Way of Death (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2012); and The Homing Instinct: Meaning and Mystery in Animal Migration (HMH, 2014).
